No picture connecting laptop to TV

Hello everyone. I'm new around here so forgive me if this isn't the best place for my question. Usually I search the web as someone has always encountered the problem before but not sure how to search this.

Connecting both my laptop to my TV, with an HDMI cable I can use the TV screen as a monitor. Both sound and picture is perfect through TV. When I follow the same process with a friends laptop (same operating system) to their TV (also HD ready) with the same cable, only audio is heard on the TV. Both sound and picture are fine on the laptop though.

I have not yet got around to trying the different laptops with the different TV's but does anyone know if this is settings on either device that need adjusting or another cable needed? Anyone encountered this problem and know the resolve?

    Many thanks in advance.

I Assume that the 2nd laptop is set to run the external monitor? If not, it's often toggle on/off by the function button and F7

Thanks for your reply. I didn't have to do anything to my laptop to display it on my TV screen so I assumed it would be the same on my friends. I will try that, thank you.

Yeah, look at your F1-F12 keys for what looks like a monitor icon. Then you generally need to hit Control + F(whatever one has the icon) to toggle between where it's sending the monitor view. I think it toggles between showing it on one device, the other, or both.
