Not bad for a company that...

"Eight-year-old Skype has never turned a profit. In 2010 it recorded a loss of $7m on revenues of $859.8m. Microsoft will assume its $686m debt as part of the deal."

Still it can be another service supported by the huge profits from Windows and Office sales.

I guess Outlook integration is the killer app. Business calls without needing a separate IP phone system.

$8.5 million is pocket money for MS.

“Peer-to-peer just eats up your bandwidth, right, it’s like the old technology.” So if Google bought Skype, Chan concluded, it would have to rewrite the entire Skype platform. Worse, buying Skype would have involved an extensive review process by the government, involving the DOJ or FCC or both. Chan figured that it would take 18-24 months to get through that process, during which Google would be at a standstill in the space. “It would’ve been disastrous,” he said.

I wonder if the same is true for MS...

What investors are not happy with MS spending 8.5 Billon on a company that has never made money. Now their is a surprise.

"But some investors carped that Microsoft already had the technology to do this, or should have developed it itself, and may soon be overtaken."

Yep they have MS instant messager and I'm sure there has been an IP TV/Phone speech or two from MS. Once again they just wait for someone to do it and then buy them up which is probably why...

"Shares of the world's largest software company fell 1.4 percent, anchored at the same level they have been for 10 years."

Like so many people have been saying for the last 10 years MS is stagnant.

    Then again...

"One factor in favor of Microsoft: it is using cash from overseas to buy Luxembourg-based Skype, which means it won't have to pay U.S. tax on that money, as it would if it had repatriated the money to the United States."

    It's a nice tax dodge.
