I need a cheap (preferably well under £100) video device that I can use to record testimonials and the like. It doesn't need to to be Hollywood quality but does need to be fairly sharp. Because I'm going to be recording a lot of voice work the microphone needs to be reasonable.

In the past I used a Nikon D90 for this sort of work but my budget these days is a LOT lower than it was :)

    Any recommendations?

I'm looking at this Vivitar cam for £27 Now I haven't looked at the price of this sort of kit for a few years, but that seems REALLY cheap! I know the Vivitar brand from back when I snapped shutters for a living and it was 'alright'.

  3. I have a Kodak Zi8 which is pretty neat. The internal mic is not bad indoors but wind noise can be a problem outdoors, a problem with most similar devices. The good thing about this camera is that it has an external mic socket so you can upgrade to using a better mic later, maybe including a 'dead cat' wind shield.

    Here is one on eBay.

Just out of curiosity - what's a "dead cat" wind shield look like?

  5. You'll have seen them - they look a dead cat with a microphone stuck up its bum! Like this ...

 - I've seen the smooth grey ones - but not seen one like that ... I can see how it gets its name. :roflmao:

Thanks. I need a barrel one, so I might just take a chance on the £30 one from Amazon, it's 12mp. Seems crazy-cheap but isn't much of a risk at that price, if it's crap I'll give it to my daughter!

I have a Zi6 - no external mic socket on that one which in retrospect I regret. I went for it over the Zi8 mainly because rather than the rechargeable battery of the Zi8 it uses 2xAA. In fact it came with 2xAA Kodak rechargeables and a nifty little wall charger. It's been handy in the past (such as daughter's 21st birthday trip to London) but I don't seem to be using it as much nowadays as my smartphone has largely supplanted it for incidental, off-the-cuff bits of videoing.

  9. Yes, I think smartphones are going to do away with dedicated devices for most people. I stopped using my digital camera and use my phone's camera now, though I will probably use my bulky old Olympus digital camera when the Tour de France peloton passes through in July.
